Children’s Hospital Services — Maternal Infant Care Center (MICC)
WVU Children’s Hospital provides high-quality, family-centered maternity care to meet the individual needs of all pregnant mothers—from routine obstetrical care to treatments for mothers and babies at the highest risk.
We do everything we can to make labor and delivery, and follow-up hospitalization if needed, as safe and comfortable as possible.
Our team includes a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, a certified women’s healthcare nurse practitioner with certification in high-risk perinatal nursing, a genetics counselor, and a registered diagnostic medical ultrasonographer. Perinatal genetic services include targeted ultrasound and genetic amniocentesis, supported by an onsite cytogenetics laboratory.
Our Maternal and Infant Care Center offers many options, including birthing rooms that simulate a normal home environment. Each room features technology equipped to handle any birthing situation.
Babies stay in their mothers' rooms. Our infant security system provides protection and peace of mind. Support programs include baby-care videos, a lactation consultation to assist new mothers who choose breastfeeding, and follow-up care.
During labor and delivery, we request that there are only two visitors per patient and only one in the room at a time.
• Visiting hours -- 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Wash your hands before entering and before leaving the MICC
• If you or any visitor has a cold, fever, or other infection, check with the nurse before visiting.
Support programs include baby-care videos, a lactation consultation to assist new mothers who choose breastfeeding, and follow-up care in our After Birth Clinic.
Breastfeeding Clinic
Our breastfeeding clinic provides support for new mothers who choose to breastfeed their infant. Our goal is to maximize nursing comfort and success for both mom and baby. Support includes monitoring infant weight gain and managing failure to thrive, building milk supply, treating mastitis and sore nipples, and advising on health issues.
